Commemorations

The sub-branch conducts five commemorations annually on behalf of the local community. They are in recognition of The Boer War, ANZAC Day, Coral Balmoral Day, Kokoda Day and Remembrance Day.

Boer War

Ber McFar mem

The Anglo-Boer War Memorial Service on the first Monday in February commemorates, particularly, two local boys, Sgt Robert Berry and A/Cpl John MacFarlane, who fell in the Battle of Onverwacht Hills, the last main battle of the war and many Berry descendants attend.  And of course the service also remembers all of the fallen of that war.  The service is conducted at the Berry MacFarlane Memorial in St Matthew’s Anglican Cemetery in Sherwood.

Boer War 3Corinda High School students read messages exchanged with their sister school in South Africa, Ermelo High School, and the sub-branch presents a medallion and cash prize to the previous year’s winner of the Anglo-Boer War Memorial Essay Competition

ANZAC Day on 25 April is a large commitment for the sub-branch.  Five services are conducted: the Dawn Service at the Croll Memorial Precinct at Corinda, the Anglo-Boer War service at the Berry MacFarlane Memorial in Sherwood, the Graceville service at the Graceville Memorial in Graceville Memorial Park, the Keating Park Memorial at Indooroopilly, and the Oxley Memorial at Bannerman Park, Oxley.

In total, over 3000 citizens attend these services each year including schools, scouts and guides.

Coral Balmoral Day

Coral Balmoral Day in May commemorates the Battles of Coral and Balmoral in 1968 which were Australia’s largest battles in the Vietnam War, with 25 Australians being lost.  This is the sub-branch’s annual service to remember all of the fallen of the Vietnam War and takes the form of an informal BBQ with a brief commemorative service in the sub-branch BBQ area.  All Vietnam veterans are invited, irrespective of the dates of their tours of duty.

Kokoda Day

Kokoda Day in August is a very special privilege for the sub-branch.  We conduct the service in the Croll Memorial Precinct, important components of which are the Kokoda Stone and the Kokoda Plaque.

Kokoda heroes

We host this commemoration for the 39th Infantry Battalion and 49th Battalion who attend in good numbers. These are the actual ‘ragged bloody heroes who saved Australia’, now all in their 80s and 90s.  The sub-branch has given them our pledge that we will never cease to conduct this annual memorial service.

Remembrance Day

The 11 November Remembrance Day Commemoration is conducted for the community in the Croll Memorial Precinct. It is the final scheduled commemoration for the year and local schools attend as does the local community generally.
